WELCOME TO THE FESTIVAL! Select your ensemble…
Not sure which ensemble to join? Here are short descriptions of each.
The Preparatory Ensemble is for students just starting their adventure with string playing. We will focus on getting to know our instrument, developing a balanced posture, solidifying fundamental techniques like bow hand shape, and creating a beautiful tone. Classes will include exercises and games that help to reinforce these ideas both with the instrument and without. By the end of this festival, our members will be able to perform our first tunes with beautiful posture, bow hand shape, and a big tone.
The Beginner Ensemble is for students who can play the D and G major scales both pizzicato and with the bow. Classes will challenge learners to continue to refine their technique while learning new bowing, fingering, and music reading skills. By the end of the festival, our members will be able to demonstrate their newly honed skills through ensemble pieces and musical creativity exercises.
The Intermediate Ensemble is for students who have at least 2 years of experience, can play with a full bow, are comfortable reading notes up to 3 sharps and 2 flats in first position, and can read and play rhythms that include 16th notes. We will focus on building a strong ensemble sound including matching bowings and articulations, listening and responding to the others, and developing techniques for more refined dynamic and tempo changes. By the end of the festival, our members will be able to perform with a deeper sense of musicality and style.
The Advanced Ensemble is geared toward high school students who already have a strong technical foundation, and who want to further refine their technique while working on higher level repertoire. Classes will focus on the variation and application of more advanced skills that support musical and stylistic considerations in the pieces we will study. Experience with shifting and reading in position is suggested. By the end of the festival, our members will be able to incorporate newly acquired skills and understandings in their personal practice and ensemble performance.
